Amenities Attendant interview questions and how to answer them

An amenities attendant interview is really a test of one thing: can you keep the shared spaces spotless and still tell a resident no without starting a feud. You'll be the person on the pool deck, in the gym and in the clubroom while the rest of the staff sits behind a desk. Here's what managers ask and what they're listening for.

Cheat sheet

The 8 questions you will almost certainly get

The questionWhat they want to knowYour angle
What do you think an amenities attendant actually does all day?People often picture handing out towels by the pool. The manager wants to know you understand the cleaning, the checking and the rule enforcement that fill most of the shift.Name the spaces: pool deck, fitness center, clubroom, rooftop, business center, dog run
A resident has brought more guests to the pool than the rules allow. What do you do?This happens on almost every hot weekend. They want to see you enforce the rule calmly and without embarrassing anyone in front of their friends.Approach the resident privately, not the whole group
How do you clean and reset a fitness center between busy periods?Sweaty benches and fingerprints on mirrors are the first thing residents complain about in reviews and surveys. They want a routine, not a vague promise.Wipe high-touch spots first: handles, benches, treadmill consoles, cable grips
Tell us about a time you had to tell a customer or guest no.Amenity rules exist to protect the building, and you're the one who says them out loud. The manager wants proof you can hold a line and stay pleasant.Pick a real example from retail, a restaurant, a gym or a front desk
A resident booked the clubroom for a party and left it a mess. How would you handle it?Reservable rooms come with deposits, cleaning fees and checklists. They want to know you'll document the damage properly so the office can act on it.Do the post-event inspection before you start cleaning
What would you do if you saw someone in the pool area who didn't seem to live here?Unauthorized guests are a safety and liability problem. They're checking whether you'll act and whether you'll do it politely.Greet the person in a friendly way and ask which unit they're visiting
What do you do if you notice the pool water looks cloudy or a chemical reading seems off?At a lot of properties the attendant logs readings or at least spots trouble. They want to know you won't guess with chemicals you aren't trained on.Close the pool or keep swimmers out if the policy says to, and put up the sign
How do you handle towel service and laundry during a slammed weekend?Running out of towels at noon on a Saturday is one of the fastest ways to get complaints. They want to hear that you plan ahead.Stock the towel station before opening and check it on every walk-through

A forgettable answer, and a better one

"What do you think an amenities attendant actually does all day?"

Forgettable

You describe it as a relaxed pool job where you mostly sit and watch.

Better

Name the spaces: pool deck, fitness center, clubroom, rooftop, business center, dog run. Describe the loop: walk each space, wipe down equipment, restock towels and sanitizer, empty trash, straighten furniture. Mention checking key fobs or wristbands and keeping an eye on guest limits. Say you'd log anything broken for maintenance instead of leaving it.

"A resident has brought more guests to the pool than the rules allow. What do you do?"

Forgettable

You'd let it slide because confronting residents feels awkward, or you'd announce it loudly to the group.

Better

Approach the resident privately, not the whole group. Explain the guest limit plainly and point to the posted rules. Offer a practical fix, like rotating guests or booking the cabana next time. If they refuse, say you'd bring in the manager on duty and note it in the log rather than arguing.

Questions to ask them

  • Which amenity spaces would I be responsible for, and who covers them when I'm on break?
  • Is there a lifeguard on duty at the pool, or am I the only staff member out there?
  • How do you handle residents who keep breaking the guest or reservation rules?
  • What does a busy summer weekend look like here, and how is staffing set up for it?
  • Would you pay for CPR or pool operator training if the role needs it?
