Sales Development Representative interview questions, and how to answer them

An SDR interview is a sales call where you're the product. Hiring managers care less about experience than about whether you'll pick up the phone again after the fortieth no, and they test that directly with a mock call. Prepare for the role play, not just the questions.

The 8 questions you will almost certainly get

The questionWhat they want to knowYour angle
Sell me something. Let's do a quick cold call where I'm the prospect. This is the job in miniature. They want to see if you can open a call, earn a few more seconds and land a meeting under pressure.Open with your name, the company, and a permission-based line such as asking for thirty seconds to explain why you called
What does a sales development representative do, in your own words?Plenty of candidates think the job is closing deals. They want proof you know it's about creating qualified meetings for account executives.Say the SDR builds pipeline by qualifying inbound leads and prospecting outbound
How would you qualify an inbound lead who requested a demo?Inbound work is a big part of many SDR seats, and passing bad meetings to AEs costs everyone time. They want a real framework, not guesswork.Respond fast, since interest fades quickly
A prospect says, "Just send me an email." What do you say? It's the most common brush-off on a cold call. Your response shows whether you've done this before or at least thought about it.Agree, so the prospect doesn't feel pushed
How do you handle hearing no dozens of times in a day?Rejection is constant in this role. They're screening for people who burn out or go quiet after a bad morning.Give a real example from a job, sport or sales experience where you kept going after repeated rejection

Walk me through how you'd plan a day with inbound leads and an outbound list.Time management decides whether an SDR hits quota. They want to hear that you'd protect call time and still answer inbound fast.Check and respond to inbound leads first, then keep watching the queue
What CRM or sales engagement tools have you used?SDRs live in Salesforce or HubSpot and a sequencing tool like Outreach or Salesloft. They want to know how much training you'll need.Name the tools you've actually used, and be honest about depth

A forgettable answer, and a better one

"Sell me something. Let's do a quick cold call where I'm the prospect."

Forgettable

You pitch features for a full minute without a single question, or you never ask for the meeting.

Better

Open with your name, the company, and a permission-based line such as asking for thirty seconds to explain why you called. Name one specific problem people in the prospect's role usually have, then ask whether it sounds familiar. Ask a follow-up question and actually listen to the answer. Handle the first objection calmly, then ask for a specific time on the calendar.

"What does a sales development representative do, in your own words?"

Forgettable

You describe closing, negotiating contracts or managing accounts as if those were the SDR's job.

Better

Say the SDR builds pipeline by qualifying inbound leads and prospecting outbound. Mention the handoff to an account executive and why a clean handoff matters. Name the core activities: calls, emails, LinkedIn touches, research. Tie it to what you've read about this company's buyers.

Questions to ask them

  • How does the team split inbound and outbound work, and has that changed?
  • What counts as a qualified meeting here, and who decides if it's accepted?
  • How do SDRs usually get promoted to account executive, and what did the last few reps do to get there?
  • What does a typical coaching session look like with you?
  • What tools does the team use for calling, sequencing and research?
