Outside Sales Representative interview questions and how to answer them

An outside sales interview is a sales call where you're the product. Hiring managers want proof you'll prospect when nobody's watching, keep a territory organized, and walk into a building that didn't invite you. Here's what they ask at each stage and how to answer without sounding rehearsed.

Cheat sheet

The 8 questions you will almost certainly get

The questionWhat they want to knowYour angle
Walk me through how you'd plan your first month in this territory.Outside reps run their own calendar. The manager wants to see that you'd have a system from the start, not just drive around hoping to find deals.Start by pulling the existing account list from the CRM and ranking accounts by revenue and risk
Tell me about a time you walked in cold and turned it into a customer.Door-to-door prospecting is the part many reps avoid. They want a real story that proves you'll do it and know how to get past the front desk.Name the type of business and why you picked it
How do you decide which accounts get your time this week?A territory always has more places to go than hours to go there. This shows whether you think about value or just drive to whoever's friendliest.Split accounts into tiers based on size and growth potential
What's your record against quota in your last role? Results are the job. They'll often check your answer against references or ask for a stack ranking, so vagueness reads as bad news.Give a clear, honest answer about where you landed against target
A long-time customer tells you they're switching to a competitor on price. What do you do?Keeping accounts is half the job. They want to know whether you panic and discount, or dig into what's really going on.Ask for a face-to-face meeting before the decision is final
How do you keep your CRM up to date when you're on the road all day?Managers forecast from the CRM. A rep who logs everything on Friday afternoon gives them a pipeline they can't trust.Log notes in the car right after each visit, while details are fresh
Sell me something in this room. It's an old test, but it still shows whether you ask questions first or launch straight into features.Pause and ask the interviewer how they use the item now
How do you handle a week where nothing closes?Outside sales is lonely, and slumps happen. They want to see that you keep your activity up instead of hiding from the phone.Admit dry spells happen and name one you've had

A forgettable answer, and a better one

"Walk me through how you'd plan your first month in this territory."

Forgettable

You say you'd get out there and meet as many people as possible, with no mention of existing accounts, routing or how you'd decide who comes first.

Better

Start by pulling the existing account list from the CRM and ranking accounts by revenue and risk. Visit the top existing customers first so nobody feels abandoned during the handoff. Map the territory into zones and block specific days for each zone to cut drive time. Set aside fixed prospecting blocks every week, not whatever time is left over. Check in with your manager on what you've learned before you lock in a longer plan.

"Tell me about a time you walked in cold and turned it into a customer."

Forgettable

Your story only has inbound leads or referrals in it, or you say cold visits don't really work anymore.

Better

Name the type of business and why you picked it. Describe what you said to the receptionist or gatekeeper to get a name or a callback. Explain how many touches it took and what finally moved the buyer. Close with the order or relationship that came from it.

Questions to ask them

  • Is this an existing territory or a new one, and what happened to the last rep?
  • How is commission structured, and what did the reps who hit target actually earn relative to plan?
  • How do you split accounts between outside and inside sales here?
  • What does a good first quarter look like for someone in this seat?
  • Do you provide a car, a car allowance or mileage reimbursement?
