Assistant General Manager interview questions and how to answer them

An AGM interview is really a test of one thing: could this person run the building tonight if the GM got a flat tire. Expect questions about labor, schedules, hard conversations and guests who are furious, and expect the interviewer to push for specifics. Bring stories from real shifts, with names of the tools you used and what changed afterward.

The 8 questions you will almost certainly get

The questionWhat they want to knowYour angle
Walk me through how you build a weekly schedule.Scheduling is where an AGM wins or loses the labor number. They want to know you start from sales forecasts, not from who asked for which days off.Start with the sales forecast and recent sales history for that week, plus the labor target the GM gives you
Tell me about a time your labor or food cost ran over. What did you do?Every AGM misses a number eventually. They want proof you can find the cause and fix it without gutting the team's hours.Say plainly which number was off and how you found out, like the weekly P&L or a daily flash report
How would you run the building on a night the GM is off? This is the core of the AGM job. They're checking whether you'd actually lead or just survive until morning.Walk the floor and back of house before the rush and check prep, par levels and staffing
Tell me about an employee you had to write up or let go.AGMs handle most of the discipline. They want someone who documents, stays calm and follows policy, not someone who avoids the conversation until it blows up.Pick a real case and describe the behavior, not the person's character
A server tells you the GM's new side-work policy is unfair. How do you respond? The AGM stands between the GM and the crew. They want to see whether you can back your boss and still listen to your staff.Listen fully and ask what exactly isn't working
Describe how you handled the angriest guest you've dealt with.Guests ask for the manager, and on many nights that's you. They're listening for calm, ownership and a sensible fix.Set the scene briefly and say what went wrong
How do you train a new shift lead?An AGM's real job is building managers so the location doesn't depend on them. This question shows whether you think that way.Describe a structured plan: shadow, then co-run, then run alone with you nearby
How do you prepare for a health inspection or a corporate audit?A bad inspection can close the doors for a day and lands on the AGM as much as the GM.Say you run your own walk-throughs on a regular basis, not the day before

A forgettable answer, and a better one

"Walk me through how you build a weekly schedule."

Forgettable

You describe collecting everyone's availability and filling the grid, with no mention of sales, labor targets or overtime.

Better

Start with the sales forecast and recent sales history for that week, plus the labor target the GM gives you. Place your strongest people on the busiest shifts first, then fill around them. Name the tool you used, such as HotSchedules, When I Work or the scheduler inside Toast. Explain how you check overtime and minors' hour rules before posting. Mention how you adjust mid-week when sales run soft.

"Tell me about a time your labor or food cost ran over. What did you do?"

Forgettable

You blame corporate pricing or a slow season and never say what you changed.

Better

Say plainly which number was off and how you found out, like the weekly P&L or a daily flash report. Show how you dug in: waste logs, portioning, theft, scheduling too early on slow mornings. Describe the specific change you made and who you brought along. Close with how the number moved over the next few weeks.

Questions to ask them

  • What would you want me to take off your plate in my first few months?
  • How is this location doing against its labor and cost targets right now, and what's driving that?
  • How does an AGM here usually become a GM, and what did the last one who got promoted do well?
  • Which days and shifts would I usually be running the building on my own?
  • What's the biggest people problem on the team that you'd want me to help with?
