Registered Behavior Technician skills: what to learn first, and what can wait

Once you're registered, the credential stops being what sets you apart, because every other applicant has it too. What gets noticed is how cleanly you run programs and how little your supervisor has to fix. Learn the task list cold first, then the habits that make a BCBA trust you with harder clients.

Step one

Gets you the interview

An active RBT credential, or a finished training courseRecruiters check the board's registry before they call. If you're not registered yet, a completed training certificate and a line saying the competency assessment is scheduled keeps you in the pile.
Task list vocabularyScreeners ask you to define reinforcement, extinction, mand, tact and prompt fading on the phone. Clear, short definitions tell them you studied rather than skimmed.
Current CPR and First AidMany clinics and in-home agencies need it on file before your first session. Having a valid card saves them a scheduling step.
Named experience with a populationSay whether you've worked with early learners, school-age kids or teens, and in which setting. A clinic hiring for an early intervention room reads that line first.
Step two

Gets you the offer

Discrete trial training and natural environment teachingMost interviews include a role-play. Running a crisp trial, then showing you can teach the same target during play, proves you can do both styles clinics use.
Measurement choicesKnowing when a program calls for frequency, duration, latency or interval recording, and taking it live without losing the client, is what makes your data usable for treatment decisions.
Following a behavior intervention plan with fidelityPanels test this with a scenario where the plan feels slow. The winning answer is always to follow it and raise concerns with the BCBA afterward.
Billable session notesNotes in CentralReach or a similar system have to describe what happened objectively and match the service code. Techs who write them right the first time save the billing team rework.
Step three

Gets you promoted

Spotting and reporting data trendsFlagging a flat skill graph or a creeping behavior rate before the BCBA's next review shows clinical judgment. That's the habit leads get picked for.
Modeling programs for new techsLead RBT roles mostly mean helping newer staff run programs the same way you do. Practice explaining why a step exists, not just how to do it.
Assessment supportHelping your BCBA gather data for a VB-MAPP, ABLLS-R or functional behavior assessment teaches you the reasoning behind the plans you run, and it's good preparation for graduate school.

Put it on your resume like this

Questions people ask

Which skill should a brand new RBT practice first?

Taking data while you teach. Most new techs either watch the client and forget to record, or record and miss the behavior. Ask to shadow a lead tech and copy how they hold the tablet or clipboard.

Do I need to know the assessments like the VB-MAPP?

Not to get hired. The BCBA runs them. Learning how they're scored helps you understand why a target is on the plan, and it looks good when you ask about a lead role.

What does the yearly renewal involve?

You complete a new competency assessment with a qualified supervisor and submit a renewal application to the board. Keep your supervision records tidy all year so renewal isn't a scramble.
