How to become a Medical Technologist

Medical technologist is the older name for the job most hospital postings now call medical laboratory scientist, and it's the degree-level version of clinical lab work. You run the analyzers, but the real job is deciding whether a result is true before a doctor acts on it. Getting hired comes down to the right training, a certification exam, and in some states a license.

Technologist, scientist or technician on the badge

You'll see this job posted under three names, and they aren't all the same rung. Medical technologist and medical laboratory scientist describe the same role: a bachelor's degree, the ASCP Board of Certification exam for medical laboratory scientists, and the authority to work every bench in the core lab, including blood bank. Some older staff still sign their name with MT(ASCP) because that's what the credential was called when they passed it. American Medical Technologists also certifies at this level, under its own MT credential.

Medical laboratory technician is the step below. It usually means an associate degree and a separate exam, and in a lot of labs the technician can't sign off on certain high-complexity work or run blood bank alone at night. If you're weighing the two, the technologist route takes longer but opens supervisor jobs, specialist benches and reference lab roles that technicians often get passed over for.

Four ways into the hospital lab

1

A bachelor's in medical laboratory science

Pick a program accredited by NAACLS, because that's what makes you eligible for the ASCP exam without extra hoops. The last stretch is a clinical practicum where you rotate through chemistry, hematology, microbiology and blood bank at a partner hospital. Treat the rotation like a long interview. Plenty of students get their first offer from the lab they trained in.

2

A science degree, then a hospital-based certificate

If you already hold a biology or chemistry degree, look for a post-baccalaureate MLS certificate program. Many are run by hospitals, and seats are limited, so apply early and have your prerequisite chemistry and microbiology courses finished. You finish with the same exam eligibility as the four-year route.

3

Technician first, then a bridge program

Work as a medical laboratory technician and finish a bachelor's through an MLT-to-MLS bridge program, often online with clinical hours at your own job. It's slower, but you're paid the whole time and your employer may cover tuition. Ask about that before you enroll, not after.

4

Military lab training

The armed services train their own laboratory staff, and that experience can count toward civilian exam eligibility through an alternate route. Check the ASCP eligibility routes against your exact training record before assuming it qualifies, since the rules are specific.

Licensing depends on your state

Most states don't license lab staff at all and simply expect national certification. A handful do, including California, New York and Florida, and each runs its own application with its own paperwork and fees. Rules differ by state and change, so check the state health department or lab licensing board for the state where you'll work before you accept an offer. If you're moving, start the license application early. It can hold up a start date longer than the interview process did.

Words lab postings screen for

Hospital hiring systems match exact terms, so write the credential and bench names the way the posting does, not in your own shorthand.

Your clinical rotation, written like work

Before

Completed clinical rotation in hospital laboratory performing various tests.

After

Ran 40+ CBCs and coagulation panels per shift on Sysmex and Stago analyzers during a 16-week hospital rotation; worked 3 QC failures through Westgard rules with the bench lead and performed 25 supervised antibody screens in blood bank.

The downside nobody puts in the posting

New grads usually start on nights or evenings, and some small hospitals run with a single technologist covering every bench until morning. That means you're the only person deciding whether to release a critical potassium or call for a redraw. You'll rarely meet a patient, which suits some people and bothers others. When something goes wrong upstream, like a mislabeled tube or a clotted sample, you're the one explaining it to an annoyed nurse in the middle of the night. The people who stay tend to like puzzles, trust their own judgment and don't need a lot of thanks.

Questions people ask

Is a medical technologist the same as a medical laboratory scientist?

Yes. Medical laboratory scientist is the newer name for the same degree-level role and the same ASCP exam. Postings use both, so put both terms on your résumé.

Can I become a medical technologist with a biology degree?

Usually, but not straight away. You'll typically need a post-baccalaureate MLS certificate program with a clinical practicum before you can sit the certification exam. Some labs hire science graduates under a trainee title while they finish that path, which is worth asking about.

Do I need a state license to work as a medical technologist?

Only in the states that license lab personnel. The rest rely on national certification and the employer's own competency checks. Check the licensing board in the state where you plan to work, because requirements vary and the application can take a while.
