An IT support specialist owns more than the phone queue. You're the one who builds the new hire's laptop, gets the conference room screen working before the board meeting and knows which switch closet the printer VLAN lives in. Learn the hands-on endpoint skills first, then the admin work, and save scripting and projects for once you're in.
| Certificate | Best for | Effort | Worth it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| CompTIA A+ | Anyone without IT work history on their resume | a couple of months of steady evenings, two exams | Still the one most support postings name. If you've never held an IT job, start here. |
| CompTIA Network+ | Specialists at small sites who handle the switches and Wi-Fi too | several weekends of study after A+ | Worth it for this role more than for a pure help desk job, because you'll be the one on site when the network drops. |
| Microsoft 365 Certified: Endpoint Administrator Associate | Specialists at Microsoft shops who want to own Intune and device setup | a couple of months, one exam, and plenty of lab time | The best next step once you're working. It lines up directly with the promotion skills above. |
Exam names, content and prices change, so check the current details on the provider's site before you register.
Responsible for setting up computers and helping employees with technical problems.
Imaged and deployed 220 laptops through Autopilot and Intune for a 3-site, 400-person company, cut new-hire setup from 2 days to 3 hours, and tracked every asset in Snipe-IT.
Help desk work is mostly remote fixes from a queue. A specialist is expected to set things up and own them too: laptops, printers, meeting rooms, onboarding and the small network pieces in the office.
Learn the basics if the postings near you mention them. Mixed offices often use Jamf or Intune to manage Macs, and knowing how to enroll one and push an app gives you something most Windows-only candidates can't say.
Sign up for the Microsoft developer program or a business trial, create a few fake users and practice licensing, mailbox access and Intune enrollment on a virtual machine. Write down each fix so you can walk through it in an interview.
Not to get hired. It becomes the thing that decides who moves up, so start with small PowerShell tasks once the daily work feels routine.
