Custodian skills: what to learn first, and what can wait

Anyone can push a mop, so the skills that get a custodian hired are the ones that protect people and floors. Start with chemicals and safe cleanup, then learn the machines that make you useful on a summer crew. The last group is building systems, and that's what gets you the keys to the boiler room.

Step one

Gets you the interview

Reading chemical labels and safety data sheetsEvery closet has a binder of safety data sheets, and a supervisor wants to know you'll check it before you mix or spray something new. Say you know never to mix bleach and ammonia products.
Using a dilution stationMost buildings run concentrate through a wall-mounted dispenser that fills bottles and buckets at the right strength. Too strong leaves a sticky film on floors, too weak doesn't disinfect, so mention it if you've used one.
Cleaning up blood and bodily fluids safelyIn a school or clinic you'll get called to a nosebleed or a sick kid in the hallway with no warning. Knowing to glove up, use absorbent powder or a spill kit and bag the waste properly is a question you'll likely get asked.
Restroom and touch-point routinesToilets, urinals, sinks, partitions, door handles and railings each get a set order, top to bottom and clean to dirty. Describing that order tells a manager you won't need watching.
Step two

Gets you the offer

Running an auto scrubber and a burnisherA walk-behind or ride-on scrubber cleans a gym or long hallway in a fraction of the mop time, and a high-speed burnisher brings the shine back on waxed tile. Say so if you can change pads and empty the recovery tank.
Stripping and refinishing VCT floorsVinyl composition tile in schools and hospitals gets stripped down and recoated with floor finish, usually over summer or a long break. Knowing how thin to lay each coat and how long to let it dry is the skill crews want.
Carpet extraction and spot removalOffices, libraries and classrooms need hot water extraction on a schedule and spot work in between. Knowing which spotter handles gum, ink or coffee keeps a stain from turning permanent.
Small fixes that save a work orderResetting a tripped flush valve, swapping a toilet seat, changing a light tube or clearing a clogged drain with a plunger or hand auger keeps the building moving. Supervisors hire the custodian who can handle the ten-minute jobs without calling maintenance.
Step three

Gets you promoted

Boiler checks and HVAC filter changesLead custodians often do the daily boiler walk, read the pressure and water level, and change air handler filters on a schedule. It's the clearest line between a custodian and a head custodian, and some buildings require a license for it.
Work order and inventory softwareDistricts and campuses track repairs and supplies in systems like SchoolDude or MaintainX. The person who logs clean, specific tickets and keeps the supply count right is the one a manager trusts with the ordering.
Keys, alarms and building securityOpening and closing a building means arming alarm zones, managing a key log and knowing who's allowed in after hours. That trust gets you the opening shift.
Event setups and room turnoversMoving a cafeteria into an assembly layout, setting a stage or turning a gym around between a game and a board meeting takes planning, not just muscle. Running them smoothly shows you can lead a crew.

ISSA CMI Custodial Technician certificationCustodians who want a recognised credential in floor care and cleaning methodsA few days of training plus a testUseful for moving from a contract cleaning company into an in-house job, and some districts pay for it. Not needed to get your first custodian role.
Low-pressure boiler operator licenseCustodians aiming for head custodian in a building with a steam or hot water boilerA few weekends of study and a state examThe one that changes your job. Only some states and cities require it, and rules vary by state, but where it's needed it's often the ticket to a lead role.

Boiler licensing and training rules differ by state and city, so check your state licensing board or ask your employer which courses it accepts before you pay for one.

Put it on your résumé like this

Weak

Cleaned classrooms, restrooms and hallways at a school.

Strong

Maintained 42,000 sq ft across two floors of a K-8 school, ran the auto scrubber and burnisher nightly, and stripped and refinished 18 classrooms of VCT each summer with zero rework.

Questions people ask

What custodian skill should I learn before my first shift?

How to read a safety data sheet and use the dilution station. You'll touch chemicals within your first hour, and doing it right from the start keeps you and everyone in the building safe.

Do I need experience with floor machines to get hired?

No. Plenty of night custodians learn the scrubber and burnisher on the job. Having run one anywhere, even at a warehouse, still helps.

Is floor refinishing hard to learn?

The steps are simple, but the patience isn't. Most people's first strip job leaves streaks or a coat that's too thick. Ask to work beside a veteran for a summer season and you'll pick it up.

Which skill moves a custodian into a head custodian job?

Building systems. Learn the boiler walk, the filter schedule and the alarm panel, and ask whether your state requires a boiler license. That knowledge is what head custodians are hired for.
