CAD Drafter skills: what to learn first, and what can wait

A CAD drafter gets hired on one thing first: can you sit down at a strange workstation and produce a clean sheet without help. Learn the program and its drawing standards before anything else, then the habits that make your files easy for other people to open. Design judgment can wait until engineers already trust your sets.

Step one

Gets you the interview

AutoCAD layers, blocks and layoutsScreeners want to hear that you draw on the right layer, insert blocks from a library and set up viewports at the correct scale in paper space. Many firms give a short timed drafting test, and sloppy layers are the first thing the grader spots.
The program your industry actually usesCivil firms run AutoCAD with the civil toolset, architecture offices run Revit, mechanical shops run SolidWorks or Inventor, and some public agencies still live in MicroStation. Name the one you know in your summary line, because a posting that says Revit rarely calls back an AutoCAD-only resume.
Reading a drawing set and its standardsYou should know what a title block, revision delta, section cut and detail callout mean, and how line weights tell a builder what's new versus existing. For mechanical work, add basic GD&T symbols so a tolerance callout doesn't stop you cold.
A portfolio of real-looking sheetsBring a PDF of a few sheets: a plan, a profile or elevation, and a detail sheet, plotted with proper pen weights. Hiring managers flip through it and judge your line work more than your answers.
Step two

Gets you the offer

Xref management and clean file habitsAttaching external references with relative paths, fixing broken ones, purging junk and keeping everything near the origin. The final interviewer often asks what you do when a base file won't load, and a calm answer here beats a fast one.
Picking up redlines in BluebeamEngineers mark up PDFs in Bluebeam Revu, and you close each cloud and mark it done as you go. Describe how you make sure nothing on a markup gets missed, since that's the mistake that costs a firm a resubmittal.
Plot styles and sheet set outputKnowing CTB versus STB plot styles, publishing a whole set to PDF at once and checking that text reads right on paper. A drafter who can push a clean set out before a deadline saves the project engineer an evening.
Dimensioning that stays associativeDimensions that update when the geometry moves, set with the office dimension style rather than exploded or typed over. Checkers catch overridden dimensions fast, and a candidate who already avoids them looks ready on day one.
Step three

Gets you promoted

Building office templates and CAD standardsSetting up the DWT template, layer naming, text styles and tool palettes everyone else draws from. The person who owns the standards usually becomes the CAD lead, since every other drafter's speed now depends on their setup.
AutoLISP, scripts or dynamic blocksSmall routines that renumber sheets or fill title block fields, or a block with every size variant built in. You don't need to be a programmer, just the person who automates the chore everybody complains about.
Modeling, not just drawingMoving from flat linework into a corridor model, a Revit family or a parametric SolidWorks part. It's the jump from drafter to designer, because you start producing the geometry instead of tracing someone else's.
Catching design conflicts before the engineer doesNoticing that a storm pipe crosses a water line with no clearance, or that a hole pattern won't line up with its mating part. Flagging it with a sketch and a suggested fix is how engineers start giving you small design calls of your own.

Certificates worth your time

Autodesk Certified Professional in AutoCAD for Design and DraftingDrafters heading into civil, architectural or general AutoCAD rolesa few weeks of practice exams if you already draft dailyThe most useful one for this title. It won't replace a portfolio, but it gets you past a screener who wants proof of software skill.
Certified SOLIDWORKS Associate (CSWA)Anyone aiming at mechanical or product draftinga couple of weekends of modeling practiceWorth it if you want manufacturing work. Mechanical shops recognise it, and the exam is hands-on enough to mean something.
Autodesk Certified Professional in Revit for Architectural DesignDrafters moving into architecture officesa month or so of evenings, since it covers modeling as well as sheetsTake it after you've used Revit on a real project. As a first step with no project experience, it's more cost than payoff.

Exam names, versions and prices change, so check the current details with Autodesk or Dassault Systemes before you book.

Put it on your résumé like this

Weak

Created CAD drawings for engineering projects using AutoCAD.

Strong

Drafted 140+ civil sheets in AutoCAD for 9 site development projects; built the office title block and layer template that cut plotting errors on resubmittals by 30%.

Questions people ask

Should a CAD drafter learn AutoCAD or Revit first?

Learn the one your target industry uses. For civil and general drafting that's AutoCAD, and its habits carry over almost everywhere. If you're set on architecture, start in Revit, but learn enough AutoCAD to open consultant files.

What's on a CAD drafting test?

Usually you're given a marked-up sketch or PDF and asked to redraw it in a set time. Graders look at layers, dimension styles, text sizes and whether the sheet plots correctly, not just whether the shapes are right. Practice with the office's likely template setup and plot to PDF before you finish.

Do I need a degree to get hired as a CAD drafter?

Most drafters come from a community college certificate or associate program, and plenty come from survey crews or machine shops. A strong portfolio and a clean test result matter more than the paper.

Is learning AutoLISP worth it for a drafter?

Not for your first job. Once you're repeating the same chore every week, a short routine that handles it gets you known as the person who fixes the office's workflow.
