Alliance managers get hired for knowing how money moves between two companies, not for being good at lunches. The skills below are ordered by when they pay off: the ones a hiring manager screens for, the ones that close the offer, and the ones that get you a bigger portfolio.
| Certificate | Best for | Effort | Worth it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Certified Strategic Alliance Professional (CSAP) | Newer alliance managers, especially in life sciences, who want a shared vocabulary for governance and alliance health | a few weekends of study plus the exam | Worth it if you're moving into pharma or biotech alliances, where it's recognised. In software it's a pleasant extra, not a filter. |
| Certified Alliance Manager (CA-AM) | Experienced alliance managers who want the senior credential from the same association | several months, including an application reviewed against your experience | Get the CSAP first. Go for this one only if you're staying in alliances for the long run and your employer values the association. |
| AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner | Software alliance managers whose biggest partner is AWS | a couple of weekends | Cheap proof that you speak the partner's language. It won't get you hired alone, but it makes co-sell conversations with AWS account teams easier. |

Responsible for managing strategic partner relationships and supporting joint sales efforts.
Launched AWS Marketplace private offers with our top ISV partner, closing 14 co-sell deals worth $2.8M and cutting average partner deal cycle from 120 to 85 days.
Learn how partner revenue gets credited in your CRM and how the big cloud partner programs work. You already know how to run a deal. What's new is proving a partner helped, and the rules a hyperscaler sets before its sellers will work with you.
You need enough to explain the integration and draw it on a whiteboard. Deep configuration work belongs to your partner engineers or solutions architects. In biotech, you'll want to follow trial design and regulatory milestones well enough to see when they threaten the plan.
It's nice to have but rarely required in software. Hiring managers there care more about marketplace deals and co-sell results you can point to. In life sciences it carries more weight, so it depends on which side you're aiming at.
Salesforce for attribution, an account mapping tool like Crossbeam or Reveal, and at least one partner portal such as Impartner or PartnerStack. If your company sells through a cloud marketplace, spend time in its seller console too.
