Adjunct professor skills: what to learn first, and what can wait

Adjunct hiring is fast and practical, so the skills that count are the ones a chair can check in a single phone call. You won't be judged on a research agenda. You'll be judged on whether a section runs smoothly with you in charge, and on whether students and the department stop hearing about problems.

Step one

Gets you the interview

Matching your transcript to the courseChairs have to prove to the accreditor that you're qualified for each course you teach. Learn to point to the exact graduate courses on your transcript that cover the subject, so the dean's office can sign off without chasing you.
A ready-to-run syllabus for a common courseHave a finished syllabus for the intro course in your field, with outcomes, a grading breakdown, a late policy and a weekly schedule. A chair who needs a section filled next week wants to see that you could start tomorrow.
Working inside Canvas, Blackboard or BrightspaceYou should be able to import a master course shell, set up weighted gradebook categories, build a quiz from a question bank and publish modules on a schedule. Online programs often test this before they assign you anything.
Translating field experience into course contentIf you work in nursing, accounting or IT, turn real cases from your job into assignments. A tax return with the names changed, or a network diagram from a past project, tells a chair you'll bring something full-time faculty can't.
Step two

Gets you the offer

A short, sharp teaching demoMany schools ask for a brief live lesson or a recorded module. Pick one concept, teach it with a quick check for understanding, and finish on time. Running long is the most common way candidates lose the room.
Grading with rubrics you can defendChairs want to know how you'll handle a student who disputes a grade. Show a rubric with clear levels for each criterion, and explain how you use comments in SpeedGrader or a similar tool so every mark has a reason attached.
Handling accommodations and student issuesKnow how to apply an accommodation letter from the disability services office, when to file an early alert, and how to report suspected plagiarism through the school's process instead of settling it by email.
Teaching from someone else's coursePlenty of sections come with a required textbook, a common final and fixed outcomes. Saying you can teach well inside that structure, without rewriting it, often decides the offer.
Step three

Gets you promoted

Online course design to a quality standardBuilding a course that passes a Quality Matters review, with aligned objectives, accessible materials and a layout students can follow, makes you the person the program asks to design shells other adjuncts will teach.
Accessible materialsCaptioning your lecture videos, tagging PDFs properly and running the built-in accessibility checker in your LMS keeps you out of complaints and makes your courses reusable across the department.
Assessment reporting for the departmentDepartments collect data on student learning outcomes for accreditation. Adjuncts who submit clean assessment results on time, and can explain what they changed because of them, get noticed by the coordinator.
Building a teaching fileKeep your evaluations, peer observation letters and redesigned assignments in one folder. It's what earns you first pick of sections, a senior adjunct rank where one exists, or an interview for a full-time lecturer post.

Certificates worth your time

ACUE Certificate in Effective College InstructionAdjuncts at colleges that partner with ACUE and cover the costa few months of weekly online modulesWorth it when your school pays for it. It gives you concrete evidence for a teaching statement, but it won't replace the degree a posting requires.
Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR)Anyone teaching or building online sectionsa couple of weeks onlineA good buy if you want online work. Program coordinators recognise it, and it's the first step toward becoming a QM peer reviewer.

Colleges set their own rules on which training they accept or pay for, so check with your college's teaching center or online learning office before you enroll.

Questions people ask

What's the most useful skill to learn before your first adjunct term?

Learn the school's learning management system inside out. Your students will live in it, your chair will check your gradebook there, and online programs judge you on it. Ask for a sandbox course and practice building a module, a quiz and a weighted gradebook before the term starts.

Do adjuncts need to publish research?

No. Adjunct contracts are for teaching, and nobody reviews your publication list for a section of intro psychology. If you're aiming for a tenure-track job later, research matters then, but it won't win you more sections.

How can you get better at teaching without a formal program?

Ask a full-time colleague to observe your class and write up what they saw. Visit the campus teaching center, which often runs free workshops for adjuncts. Then change one assignment each term based on what students got wrong, and keep notes on what happened.

Is it worth learning to teach online if you prefer the classroom?

Yes, even if you mostly teach in person. Online and hybrid sections make up a lot of adjunct work, and a chair with a hybrid section to fill will call the person who already knows how to run one.
