Account Executive vs Account Manager: the real difference

An Account Executive closes new business; an Account Manager keeps it. Here is which BLS occupation code each title falls under, and what each one pays.

An Account Executive is paid to close business that does not exist yet. An Account Manager is paid to keep and grow business that already closed. Neither title is an occupation the federal statistics measure, which is why the pay question has no single answer — the closest matching codes run from a median of $64,820 a year for Advertising Sales Agents to $148,270 for Sales Managers, both May 2025 estimates from the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook. This post shows which code each title lands in, what the four candidates pay, and how to read a posting to tell which one you are being offered.

What is the difference between an Account Executive and an Account Manager?

One number. An Account Executive is measured on new revenue signed. An Account Manager is measured on revenue retained and expanded from accounts the company already has. Everything else — the pipeline reviews, the CRM hygiene, the quarterly business reviews — follows from which of those two numbers sits at the top of the compensation plan.

The federal task lists do not split the two, which is the first useful thing to know. O*NET's task list for Advertising Sales Agents (41-3011) holds both jobs in a single line: "Maintain assigned account bases while developing new accounts." The two wholesale and manufacturing codes do the same at greater length, though the opposite is widely assumed. Sales Representatives, Wholesale and Manufacturing, Except Technical and Scientific Products (41-4012) asks one person both to "Identify prospective customers by using business directories" and to "Consult with clients after sales or contract signings to resolve problems and to provide ongoing support." Its technical-products sibling, 41-4011, opens with "Negotiate prices or terms of sales or service agreements" and reaches "Provide customers with ongoing technical support" at number 17 of its 33 tasks. Neither code separates the hunter from the farmer. The line between 41-4011 and 41-4012 is not new business versus renewals; it is whether the product is technical or scientific, and nothing else.

The split is a company's org-chart decision, then, not a boundary in the occupational data. A twelve-person software company gives one Account Executive both halves and calls it a full cycle role. A thousand-person one hires an Account Executive to sign the logo and hands the account to an Account Manager at implementation. Same work, divided differently, and the title tells you the size of the company more reliably than it tells you what the day contains.

Which occupation code does each title fall under?

O*NET records the titles employers actually report for each occupation, and neither "Account Executive" nor "Account Manager" appears on its own in any of the five sales occupation summaries listed in the sources below. The variants that do appear are specific, and they point in different directions.

How to read this: the left column is a title a company writes on a posting, and the middle column is where a statistician would file the same job. The mapping runs one way only. You can go from a posting to a code and get a wage estimate; you cannot go from a code back to a title, because one code covers dozens of them and O*NET only samples a handful.

What does an Account Executive earn?

It depends on the product, and not by a little. The two wholesale and manufacturing sales codes describe the same job separated only by whether what is sold is technical or scientific. The non-technical half had a median of $72,080 in May 2025; the technical half, $104,920. Same posting language, same CRM, same quota structure, and a gap of more than thirty thousand dollars at the median.

Here is the position worth arguing with: for a sales job, the industry you sell into moves your pay more than the seniority word in your title. The evidence sits inside a single occupation code. BLS breaks Advertising Sales Agents down by industry for May 2025, and the top and bottom of that one code are further apart than the medians of two different codes.

One occupation code, five industries. The spread inside the code is wider than the gap between this code's median and the code above it.

Advertising and public relations $72,910
Television broadcasting $60,180
Radio broadcasting $59,770
Newspaper publishers $48,190

The same pattern repeats one code up. Within 41-4011, the technical and scientific sales code, BLS's May 2025 industry medians run from $99,920 for people selling professional and commercial equipment through merchant wholesalers, to $106,650 in manufacturing, $108,100 in professional, scientific and technical services, $118,990 for wholesale trade agents and brokers, and $133,690 for merchant wholesalers of nondurable goods. Nobody in that list has a different title. They have different buyers, different deal sizes and different commission plans, and the ordering is stable enough to plan a career around.

An Account Executive at a newspaper publisher sits at a May 2025 median of $48,190. An Account Executive selling for a streaming or social platform sits at $77,940. Both are filed under 41-3011, both do the work in the task list above, and the distance between them is larger than the distance between the 41-3011 median of $64,820 and the 41-4012 median of $72,080. A promotion moves you along one axis. Changing what you sell moves you along a wider one.

What does an Account Executive do all day?

Both titles spend most of the week inside the same software. O*NET lists 32 technology categories for 41-4011, alphabetically rather than by importance, and the one that decides the shape of the day is customer relationship management: Salesforce — the only one of the four CRM entries flagged as a hot technology — alongside Act!, ActionWare and SAP Sybase SQL Anywhere. Around it sit Microsoft Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word. What O*NET does not publish is how the week divides between talking to buyers and typing up what they said, so any percentage you have seen for that split came from a vendor survey, not from the federal data.

Take one occupation's task list and sort it into the two columns a company would draw. Every row below belongs to 41-4012 — one code, one set of duties.

Reads like an Account ExecutiveReads like an Account Manager
Identify prospective customers by using business directories, following leads from existing clients … and attending trade showsConsult with clients after sales or contract signings to resolve problems and to provide ongoing support
Negotiate details of contracts and paymentsAnswer customers' questions about products, prices, availability, product uses, and credit terms
Prepare sales contracts and order formsRecommend products to customers, based on customers' needs and interests
Estimate or quote prices, credit or contract terms, warranties, and delivery datesMonitor market conditions, product innovations, and competitors' products, prices, and sales

Both columns are one job as the government counts it, and 41-4011 is no different: it carries "Negotiate prices or terms of sales or service agreements" and "Provide customers with ongoing technical support" in the same list. Hence the second position this post will defend: Account Executive and Account Manager are not two occupations. They are one occupation, cut in half by employers big enough to specialize.

What does an Account Manager earn?

This is where the title stops being informative, because "Account Manager" is used for two jobs with roughly $60,000 between them.

If the role carries a renewal quota and an expansion target, it is a sales representative job and the codes above apply: a median between $64,820 and $104,920 depending on the product, in BLS's May 2025 estimates. If it is a named-account support desk with an upgraded title and no quota, the closest federal match is Customer Service Representatives, where the May 2025 median is $44,770 a year, or $21.53 an hour, and BLS lists a high school diploma as the typical entry education. That occupation held 2,666,000 jobs in 2025 and is projected to decline 5 percent through 2035, with about 289,500 openings a year.

The tell is in the posting, and it is not subtle once you know to look. A quota, a book of business, a renewal rate or a net revenue retention target means the first job. "Serve as the primary point of contact," a ticket queue and a response-time commitment mean the second. Ask which number the role is reviewed on before you ask about salary, because the answer decides which of those two ranges you should be anchoring to — and a candidate who names $95,000 for a role BLS would file at $44,770 has ended the conversation without learning why.

Does one lead to the other?

Both feed the same next rung, and the numbers on that rung are worth knowing before anyone argues about the title on this one.

Sales Managers, the usual step up from either title

47,300Projected openings a year, 2025–35

BLS gives the typical entry route into Sales Managers as a bachelor's degree plus less than five years of experience in a related sales occupation, and projects the occupation to grow 4 percent from 2025 to 2035. O*NET's respondent survey for 11-2022 has 71 percent saying a bachelor's degree is required of new hires, 19 percent some college, and 5 percent an associate's degree. The same survey for Advertising Sales Agents shows 52 percent bachelor's and 30 percent high school diploma, so the credential tightens as you move up — but it is not universal at either level, and 41-4011 is looser still, at 39 percent bachelor's against 30 percent some college.

The volume side reads worse than the wage side. Advertising sales agent employment is projected to decline 7 percent from 2025 to 2035 against a 2025 base of 99,300 jobs, with about 7,800 openings a year. The two wholesale and manufacturing sales codes together are projected at 0 percent change over the same decade, on 1,571,400 jobs, with about 123,400 openings a year — flat headcount, and a large replacement flow running underneath it. An Account Executive in media is competing for a shrinking number of seats; one selling technical products is competing for a stable number with heavy turnover.

What these numbers do not tell you

A great deal, and the gaps are wide enough that a reader who skips this section will misuse every figure above.

The OEWS survey that produces these wages counts commissions, incentive pay and production bonuses inside the annual number, which is why a sales median can sit well above the base salary a posting advertises. The same definition excludes stock bonuses and profit-sharing. For an Account Executive paid partly in equity, the BLS figure is short by exactly the component nobody quotes in the first screen, and short by an amount no public source measures. The estimates also do not separate base from variable, which is the split an Account Executive negotiates hardest, and they say nothing about what share of the people at that median actually hit quota. They are May 2025 estimates published on a lag, describing a market that has already moved.

There is also no city-level view here, and the reason is worth naming. The readable per-occupation OES pages that used to carry a metro table are gone: the URL for 41-3011 now lands on the OEWS data tables index, spreadsheets only. Metro estimates survive inside those downloads, so an "Account Executive salary in Austin" figure is not necessarily invented — it is simply no longer checkable in one click. The percentile spread above is the honest substitute: $52,600 to $200,440 for 41-4011. What BLS does not publish is what drives that width. The industry medians here explain part of it; tenure, quota attainment and deal size are not broken out anywhere public.

If you are applying for this role

Three specifics.

Search the variants, not the two headline titles. Set saved searches for Account Executive, Account Manager, Account Representative, National Sales Executive and Sales Representative. The last three are phrasings O*NET records directly from employers, and a search on the first two alone will not surface postings for identical work.

Anchor to the code your product falls into. For a technical or scientific product, the May 2025 median is $104,920 and the tenth percentile is $52,600. For advertising and media, the median is $64,820. Averaging every "Account Executive" figure you have seen produces a number that describes no actual job.

Ask one question in the first screen: what number is this role reviewed on? New bookings, retention, or a response-time target. That single answer sorts the job into one of the three wage bands in this post, and it costs you nothing to ask before a take-home does.

If that variant search means filling the same form on five boards, HeroApply fills the application from your resume so the extra searches do not each cost you an evening.

Frequently asked questions

Does an Account Executive make more than an Account Manager?

Not reliably, because neither title is a wage category the government measures. What the data does show is that the codes these titles land in are far apart: Advertising Sales Agents (41-3011) had a median of $64,820 in May 2025, while Sales Representatives, Wholesale and Manufacturing, Technical and Scientific Products (41-4011) had a median of $104,920. The product being sold predicts pay better than the word on the business card.

Is Account Manager a sales job or a customer service job?

It is posted as both, and the pay follows which one the company means. If the role owns a renewal number and a quota, its closest federal match is a sales representative code with a median between $64,820 and $104,920 in May 2025. If it is a support desk with an upgraded title, the closest match is Customer Service Representatives, median $44,770.

Which title should I search for on job boards?

Search both, plus the variants O*NET actually records from employers — Account Representative, Advertising Account Executive, National Sales Executive, Sales Representative. Employers file the same work under all of them. O*NET lists "Account Representative" under 41-4012 and "Advertising Account Executive" under 41-3011, so a search on the two headline titles alone misses postings.

Does an Account Executive become a Sales Manager?

It is the common next rung in the federal data. BLS lists a bachelor's degree plus less than five years of experience in a related sales occupation as the typical entry route into Sales Managers (11-2022), an occupation with 650,100 jobs in 2025 and a median of $148,270. About 47,300 sales manager openings are projected each year through 2035.
